The Birds of Kentucky (Hardcover): Burt L. Monroe, William Zimmerman The Birds of Kentucky (Hardcover)
Burt L. Monroe, William Zimmerman
R1,197 R993 Discovery Miles 9 930 Save R204 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first book of its kind to be published for the Bluegrass State, The Birds of Kentucky is designed to provide an accurate and scientifically rigorous description of all the species of birds found in Kentucky. This comprehensive guide features a wealth of information, including abundance records, migration dates, and additional reference material, and indicates whether a bird is a permanent resident, winter resident, summer resident, visitant, or transient. Additionally, Monroe reviews the history of ornithologists who have worked in Kentucky and outlines the physiography of the state as it relates to birding. More than just a verbal portrait of Kentucky avifauna, The Birds of Kentucky includes fifty-one color paintings by the renowned wildlife artist William Zimmerman, whose work has been favorably compared to that of John James Audubon. In contrast to Audubon's romanticism and often tortuous style, however, Zimmerman offers us "comfortable" birds that look as if they are about to take wing and leave the page. Beautifully illustrated and based on a lifetime of field observation and research, this book provides an excellent guide to the natural history of the birds of the Bluegrass.

The Shaping of Foreign Policy (Paperback): William Zimmerman The Shaping of Foreign Policy (Paperback)
William Zimmerman
R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How are foreign policy decisions made? This volume shows the various approaches to answer this question. In their introduction, Jacobson and Zimmerman make clear the goals and techniques of the comparative analysis of foreign policy behavior and, following this, they provide seven basic essays exemplifying, with variations, the principal approaches used to explain foreign policy behavior: the systemic, the environmental, the societal, the governmental, and the idiosyncratic (or psychological).

Jan F. Triska and David D. Finley illustrate the systemic approach as applied to Soviet-American relations. Harold and Margaret Sprout then deal with the significance of the physical environment in the study of international politics. Two essays follow--by, respectively, Karl W. Deutsch and Gabriel A. Almond--representing the merger of international and comparative studies in this field. The contribution by Henry A. Kissinger examines the relationship of certain governmental systems to foreign policy behavior.

The editors' introduction and selections reflect excitingly and accurately the "state of the art" of comparative foreign policy analysis and place before the reader, in clear and compact form, the continuing dialogue among scholars about one of the most controversial areas in the study of political processes.

"Harold Karan Jacobson" (1929-2001) was professor of political science and Director of the International Organization Program at the University of Michigan. Throughout his career he has held research grants from the Social Science Research Council and the Rockefeller Foundation, and has been a World Affairs Center Fellow. In addition to writing and editing several books on American foreign policy, international organizations, and foreign policy behavior, Jacobson contributed numerous articles to scholarly and professional journals and was a member of the editorial boards of the "Journal of Conflict Resolution" and "International Organization."

"William Zimmerman" is professor of political science, research professor at the Center for Political Studies, and research scientist at the Center for Russian and East European Studies all at the University of Michigan. His research interests include comparative government and politics and world politics/international relations. His most recent book is "The Russian People and Foreign Policy: Mass and Elite Perspectives, 1993-2000."

Ruling Russia - Authoritarianism from the Revolution to Putin (Paperback, Revised edition): William Zimmerman Ruling Russia - Authoritarianism from the Revolution to Putin (Paperback, Revised edition)
William Zimmerman; Afterword by William Zimmerman
R683 R591 Discovery Miles 5 910 Save R92 (13%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When the Soviet Union collapsed, many hoped that Russia's centuries-long history of autocratic rule might finally end. Yet today's Russia appears to be retreating from democracy, not progressing toward it. Ruling Russia is the only book of its kind to trace the history of modern Russian politics from the Bolshevik Revolution to the presidency of Vladimir Putin. It examines the complex evolution of communist and post-Soviet leadership in light of the latest research in political science, explaining why the democratization of Russia has all but failed. William Zimmerman argues that in the 1930s the USSR was totalitarian but gradually evolved into a normal authoritarian system, while the post-Soviet Russian Federation evolved from a competitive authoritarian to a normal authoritarian system in the first decade of the twenty-first century. He traces how the selectorate--those empowered to choose the decision makers--has changed across different regimes since the end of tsarist rule. The selectorate was limited in the period after the revolution, and contracted still further during Joseph Stalin's dictatorship, only to expand somewhat after his death. Zimmerman also assesses Russia's political prospects in future elections. He predicts that while a return to totalitarianism in the coming decade is unlikely, so too is democracy. Rich in historical detail, Ruling Russia is the first book to cover the entire period of the regime changes from the Bolsheviks to Putin, and is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand why Russia still struggles to implement lasting democratic reforms.

Soviet Perspectives on International Relations, 1956-1967 (Hardcover): William Zimmerman Soviet Perspectives on International Relations, 1956-1967 (Hardcover)
William Zimmerman
R4,311 Discovery Miles 43 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Serious debates and discussions on world politics in Russian journals and books have greatly increased since 1956, resulting in a steadily changing appraisal of the world political situation by the Russians. Professor Zimmerman studies that changing appraisal. He describes Soviet international relations perspectives during Khrushchev's years in power and the three years following. He uncovers the answers Soviet commentators implicitly or explicitly give to such questions as: Who, in the Soviet view, are the main actors in international politics, and what does identifying them suggest about the Soviet perspective? In the Soviet analysis, what is the global distribution of power? How do Soviet analysts characterize the capabilities, motives, and decision-making process of the United States? Contents: I. Introduction. II. The Emergence of International Relations as a Discipline. III. The Actors. IV. The Hierarchy. V. The Distribution of Power. VI. United States Foreign Policy from the Soviet Perspective. VII. The Balance of Power as System and Policy. VIII. Post-Imperialism and the Transformation of Soviet Foreign Policy. William Zimmerman

Zimmerman asks. 'What difference does it make for Yugoslavia's political evolution that it exists in an international environment as well as a domestic one?" Presenting a lucid analysis of the mutual influence of external and internal factors in Yugoslav politics, he pays special attention to the political significance of the one million Yugoslavs who have crossed the country's borders to work in capitalist Western Europe.

"A very significant contribution to the field of Russian studies. There is really nothing like it out there. The book also holds great interest for political scientists who do not work on Russia, as the findings relate to debates that grew out of studies of American public opinion. The author has a track record as a specialist on the communist world whose work has always tested hypotheses drawn from broader theoretical literatures. He has done it again. And done it very well."--George Breslauer, University of California, Berkeley

"First-rate. A brief description cannot do justice to the richness of the data and analyses in "The Russian People and Foreign Policy," Moreover, Zimmerman knows the literature on U.S. public opinion and he succeeds admirably in making comparisons where it is appropriate to do so."--Ole R. Holsti, Duke University

"This is an important book for Russianists and those interested in the effects of democratic transition. It presents very rich and interesting data and a really important new source for understanding the changes in Russia through the 1990s. Given the central role of the debate over democracy assistance within the U.S. government and NGO circles, the arguments and evidence it offers will also have appeal to policymakers and others involved in fostering the Russian transition."--Regina Smyth, Pennsylvania State University

"This book is of such high quality that I would not be surprised if its publication will depress future scholarship on the subject for some time to come. The standard it sets is simply too high for others to match."--Micahel McFaul, Stanford University
